The Norwegian IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen delivered a strong performance to ultimately be crowned winner of Kronborg Chess Open 2026 after a closely fought and dramatic tournament in the beautiful surroundings of Comwell Borupgaard in Snekkersten.
Kaasen finished on 5½ points out of a possible 9, securing first place ahead of a strong international field. The margin was narrow just half a point ahead of his closest competitor, IM Floryan Eugene of France—highlighting just how evenly matched this year’s Grandmaster group was.
A closely contested Grandmaster group
In fact, the tension was palpable throughout the entire tournament. Only one point separated second place from eighth place in the 10-player field, where several grandmasters and international masters battled for the top spot. This reflects an exceptionally high and competitive level, where every round had a decisive impact on the final standings. See all results here.
Heading into the final round, the stage was set for an almost fairytale ending. Kaasen not only had the chance to win the tournament but also to secure his final Grandmaster norm and thus become a Grandmaster. The task was clear: defeat his compatriot FM Nicolai Maxime Ostensen in the last round.
On Norway’s National Day
An extra layer of symbolism was added as the final round was played on Norway’s National Day, May 17. A victory would have been a perfect culmination a Norwegian triumph on multiple levels. However, Kaasen was unable to score the full point in the final round and narrowly missed out on the Grandmaster norm this time. Two years ago, he was also just half a point short.
Nevertheless, he could celebrate a well-deserved tournament victory after a consistent and well-played performance across all nine rounds. His performance rating of 2484 reflects a high level of play, and the victory firmly establishes him among the most exciting Norwegian players on the international chess scene.
Among the top finishers were IM Floryan Eugene in second place with 5 points and IM Jakob Leon Pajeken in third place, also on 5 points, following closely contested games and a hard fight for the top positions.
Over 70 international players
Kronborg Chess Open 2026 marked another milestone for the tournament, once again breaking participation records. A total of 200 players took part, including 70 from abroad, confirming the tournament’s growing international appeal. Players from countries such as the USA, Canada, France, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland were represented.
With its strong field, intense competition, and international participation, Kronborg Chess Open continues to strengthen its position as one of the most attractive chess tournaments in the Nordic region.
For Tor Fredrik Kaasen, it was a tournament that brought both triumph and a glimpse of what might have been but most importantly, he secured the title of Kronborg Champion 2026.
