For the first time ever, the Kronborg Chess Open will welcome one of Denmark’s strongest and most experienced grandmasters: GM Boris Chatalbashev. After several years in which the dates simply did not align, it has finally been possible to include the double Danish Champion in this year’s tournament. With a rating of 2535, Chatalbashev will enter as the top seed in the Grandmaster Group.
Four‑time Bulgarian Champion
Chatalbashev, who has represented Denmark since 2018, is one of the most accomplished players in Danish chess. He is a four‑time Bulgarian Champion (1991, 1998, 2007, 2010) and a two‑time Danish Champion (2023 and 2024). As a young player, he made history by becoming the youngest Bulgarian Champion ever in 1991.
Winner of More Than 30 International Tournaments
In addition to his national titles, Chatalbashev has won or shared first place in over 30 international tournaments, including events in Paris, Reggio Emilia, Porto San Giorgio, Imperia and Val Thorens. He has also represented Bulgaria at three Chess Olympiads and two European Team Championships.
Chatalbashev’s debut at the Kronborg Chess Open is a significant boost to this year’s Grandmaster Group, which is already the strongest in the tournament’s history. With him entering as the top seed, the battle for first place becomes even more competitive, and we are delighted to welcome him to this year’s event.
