GM Vitaly Kunin Returns

2024 Kronborg Master joins a strong 2026 line up

Two years after his tournament victory in 2024, German Grandmaster Vitaly Kunin is set to return to Snekkersten for the 2026 edition of the Kronborg Chess Open. This year, Kunin enters as the second seed in a Grandmaster group that is shaping up to be the strongest the event has ever hosted.

The level in the group is significantly higher than in previous years, and early indications suggest that players will need a rating above 2400 to be considered for the remaining spot. With only one place still open, the group already includes players from eight different countries, putting it on track to set a new record for international diversity.

Kunin explains that his positive experience in Denmark in 2024 played a major role in his decision to return.

“I was very satisfied with the conditions when I played here in 2024. The playing environment, the organization, and the overall atmosphere were excellent. You can feel that the organizers care about the details, and that makes a real difference for the players. That’s why I’m happy to be back this year,” says GM Vitaly Kunin.

For the organizers, Kunin’s participation is another sign of the tournament’s growing international reputation. With several titled players and strong young talents heading to hotel Comwell Borupgaard in Snekkersten, the 2026 edition is expected to be one of the most competitive in the chess event’s history.
